Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, and the Premier of Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.), Dennis King, announced a bilateral agreement that will support an average of $10 per day ELCC in the province by 2025-26. P.E.I. joins British Columbia, Nova Scotia and Yukon as the fourth jurisdiction to sign a bilateral agreement with the Ottawa in order to support a Canada-wide national child care system.
The Government of Canada announced $121.3 million over the next five years to PEI’s child-care system, include a one-time investment of $3.6 million to support early the early childhood education workforce. The contribution will create 452 new child care spaces on the Island. PEI currently invests $31 million in ELCC annually, with $2.9 million allocated for a universal pre-K program and $28.4 for the sector more broadly.
