Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, was joined by the Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, Andrew Furey, and the Minister of Education, Tom Osborne, to announce a federal-provincial agreement that would support $10 per day child care in the province by 2023.
The Government of Canada agreed to contribute $347 million over the next five years, a one-time investment of $6.5 million to support the early childhood education workforce and $35 million for the 2021-22 to 2024-25 Canada-Newfoundland ELCC Extension Agreement.
With this funding, parents in Newfoundland and Labrador will see child care fees drop from $25 per day to $15 per day in 2022, with another reduction to $10 per day in 2023. 5,895 new child care spaces will be created and a new optional full-day, year round four-year old pre-kindergarten program will be introduced. The agreement will also expand not-for-profit and public delivery of ELCC.
